I recently picked up a Honda H3001 riding mower that was being sold for parts. I’ve been bringing it back to life one problem at a time, and so far the biggest headache has been the deck belt.

I bought two replacement belts, and both were the correct size (5/8″ x 72″), but I couldn’t get either one installed. At first I thought I had the wrong belt, but after spending way too much time fighting with it, I finally figured out the trick.

The correct OEM belt is Honda part #76181-763-A02, or any equivalent 5/8″ x 72″ deck belt.

Here are a few things I learned that might save someone else some time:

  • If the belt feels too tight or too loose, don’t assume it’s the wrong belt. Check and adjust the belt tensioner first.
  • The installation order matters. Put the belt on the engine pulley before mounting the deck. If you install the deck first, there’s barely enough room to get the belt onto the engine pulley.
  • After the belt is on the engine pulley, connect the two front mounting bars that hold the deck.
  • Install the two side bars last.

One thing that gave me trouble was lining up the mounting bars. They seemed just a little too short. I ended up putting a block of wood under the deck to lift it slightly, and that made it much easier to line everything up.

I’ll add a belt routing diagram below since it can be confusing the first time.
